b.1976, based in Bucharest, Romania.
I have worked as a photojournalist since I began to study at the Superior School of Journalism
(SSJ) in Bucharest. After having graduated, I worked for six years as a photojournalist for the
main Romanian newspapers and magazines / journals. Then, in 2006, constricted by the Romanian
media possibilities and willing to do more on my own, I started freelancing as a stringer for
international wire agencies such as Reuters, AP, AFP, EPA.
I slowly shifted my work focus from news photography to long-term projects and in 2005 I was
accepted as a member of Panos Pictures. This enabled me to have my work published in worldwide
journals such as The Times, New York Times, Courier International, Paris Match, Der Spiegel,
NewsWeek Japan and others. In 2005 and 2006 I received the award for Best Romanian Photojournalist
within the photo competitions organized by the Romanian Press Photographers Associations.
I began to travel worldwide, first to Kenya, documenting the lack of social justice for the SIDA
Swedish Government Agency, then on a long trip to India (on my own) which, finally, led to a
story on the Ganges River, published in National Geographic. In addition, I have also travelled
to Afghanistan, Egypt and Bolivia.
At present, I'm focusing on topics rather ignored by the mainstream media and, for a better
understanding, I have chosen areas closer to my cultural and social background. Im trying to
finance my own stories and restrict my travels to my corner of Europe.
Currently, I have two long-terms project underway. The first one, Around the Black Sea, granted
by the US Marshall Fund, visually explores the relations among the young democracies around the
Black Sea and the way its people relate to it. The second, Pride and Concrete, documents the
stories of Romanian emigrants and how they have reshaped the traditional countryside of Romania.
